How Wellness Ventures’ Patient Service Brings Empathy to Every Meal at Labaid Hospitals
Hospital food has a global reputation. Almost universally, it’s the part of a hospital stay that nobody talks about kindly. Pale plates. Cold trays. Meals that arrive looking like punishment.
We thought: that doesn’t have to be true here.
A partnership that started with a simple question
Wellness Ventures and Labaid are part of the same family. Labaid Cardiac Hospital and Labaid Specialized Hospital are pillars of healthcare in Bangladesh, the country’s first international-standard cardiovascular specialty hospital among them. Wellness Ventures grew out of the same group, with food and wellness as its mandate.
So when we sat down to design Patient Service Food, the question wasn’t can we cut costs on hospital meals? It was: what would a meal look like if we treated it as part of the patient’s recovery?
The answer changed everything.
A meal is part of the treatment
Here’s something that doesn’t get said enough: nutrition isn’t a side issue in healthcare. For a cardiac patient, sodium isn’t a preference; it’s a clinical line. For a post-surgical patient, protein isn’t optional. For a recovering chemotherapy patient, taste, texture, and appetite are part of the survival equation.
Our Patient Service Food program treats every meal as a small piece of clinical work:
- Menus designed in coordination with clinical nutritionists, so every diet category (cardiac, diabetic, renal, post-operative, paediatric, general) gets food that supports the treatment, not works against it.
- Strict hygiene and food-safety protocols, at hospital-grade standards, not catering-grade.
- Fresh ingredients, daily. No reheated leftovers, no industrial shortcuts.
- Quality cooking, because a heart patient is also a human being who’d like dinner to taste like dinner.
The dignity dimension
The clinical part is essential. The human part is what makes our patients write to us.
When you’re in a hospital bed, you’re already vulnerable. The tray that arrives at your bedside isn’t just food; it’s one of the few things that comes from outside your body and lands in your hands all day. It tells you something about how you’re being treated.
We train our service staff for that moment specifically. Servers who know how to greet a patient. Who knock before entering. Who set the tray down with care, not haste. Who notice if the patient is unable to feed themselves and respond with grace, not awkwardness.
This isn’t optional. It’s the standard.
It’s why we describe the program with the word empathy, not “service,” not “delivery.” Empathy is what changes a tray from a chore into a small kindness.
Wellness, applied where it matters most
The seven parameters of wellness (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental, financial) aren’t abstract here. They’re literal.
A patient who eats well is supported physically. A patient whose meal arrives warm, plated, and on time is supported emotionally. A patient whose dietary restrictions are honoured without fuss is supported mentally; they don’t have to fight for their own care. The family that’s spared the daily run for outside food is supported financially and socially.
Every tray we send up is, in its small way, all seven parameters in practice.
Across the Labaid network
The Patient Service Food program runs across the Labaid network, including Labaid Cardiac Hospital and Labaid Specialized Hospital in Dhanmondi, with the model being extended further. The standards are consistent: same training, same hygiene protocols, same care for the plate.
For the families of patients, that consistency matters. You shouldn’t have to worry about whether the food in the room is helping or hurting. You should be able to trust the tray.
What we’re still learning
Hospital food is not a problem you ever fully solve. Patients change. Diets change. New clinical guidance changes what we cook. We’re constantly refining menus, retraining staff, listening to patient feedback, and adjusting.
That’s the work. And it’s the kind of work we believe in doing, quietly, every day.
A quiet revolution, one tray at a time
Most of the people who eat our food never visit a Wellness Cafe. They don’t see our cloud kitchen menu or sit down at Zen. They meet us through a tray placed gently on a bedside table during the hardest week of their year.
That’s a privilege we take seriously.
If a meal can make a recovery a little easier, a family a little less worried, a hospital stay a little more dignified, that’s not a small thing. That’s the whole thing.
